The City of Portland and the Portland Public School District are partnering on a new carpooling program as part of Portland’s Safe Routes to School effort.
The ironic effect of growing fears for kids’ personal safety has been to make the environment more dangerous for them. Parents driving their children by car can make the streets around schools more congested, polluted, and dangerous for those walking and biking. Traffic data reveal that 50% of children who are hit by cars near schools are hit by cars driven by parents of other students. Also, research shows that one car dropping off one child at one school for one month generates three pounds of idling emissions.
